L’IL DECKHANDS PUT TO THE TEST AT FASTBALLFEST
The U12 Squirts travelled to Sebringville on May 30th to participate in the 95 team Mitchell Fastballfest Tournament. The young locals drew a tough opening game versus a polished Exeter team. Goderich found themselves in a 4-0 hole early in the game, and although they consistently put the ball in play, they quickly realized that this Exeter team was very good defensively.

Katie Ridsdale singled twice plating Temika Walter in the 5th inning. Lily Lierman and Jordyn Hodges also scored in this game.

The next day saw the Deckhands battling against the Camlachie Cougars. Goderich jumped out to a 6 run first inning sending 11 girls to the plate only to be equalled by the Cougars at the bottom of the inning. Paige Chebott scored to make break the tie, but Camlachie scored 4 more to jump ahead 10-7. The L’il Decks had tied the game with nobody out and a runner on 2nd when the umpires called the game due to time limit reverting back to the last completed inning sending Goderich away with the loss. Scoring twice were Shalen Kernighan and Abby Archambault. Grace Taylor was 2 for 2 and had an outstanding game.

Next up was Fullerton. The home side certainly was beginning to rise up to the level of competition in this tournament. Both teams battled hard all game as Goderich took a 6-5 lead into the final inning only to see Fullerton’s bottom half of the order due the damage scoring 6 runs. Chebott scored the final run in an 11-7 loss. One notable play during this game was made by the youngest player in the tournament. Goderich centre fielder, Jamie Archambault, smoothly fielded a base hit up the middle and had the creativity to attempt to throw out the runner at first putting a big smile on Coach Niki Kovats.

TRI COUNTY LEAGUE REPORT

With only 1 day off, the Squirts were back on the diamond June 2nd hosting Ethel. Megan Kovats, who was helped by the excellent efforts of Hodges and Ava Fitzgerald behind the plate, escaped a bases loaded jam in the first. Fitzgerald, who had an incredible 11 pitch at bat, scored ahead of Emily Hartin and Paige Bauer giving the home side a 7-1 lead. Ethel stormed back to make it a 1 run ball game, but Chebott scored the insurance run to seal the deal after Payton Swan cooled the visiting bats. Zoe Milne continued to impress the coaching staff with her strong play at first base.

The next night saw the L’il Decks travel to Crediton. After scoring two in the top of the first, Walter found her groove striking out the side. Goderich then proceeded to score 5 runs in each of the next 3 innings to cruise back to town with a 17-6 victory. Walter and Swan combined for 9 strikeouts in this game. Camryn Austin and Bauer led the way scoring twice each. Back to back doubles by Hodges and Hartin served notice early that the visitors meant business on this night.

The locals have a few well deserved days off, but, have their softball scoring/position homework assigignments to keep them busy. Next up is a tough game in Londesboro on June 9th where they will be tested by one of the better Tri County clubs.
