The only youth fastball team in Goderich finished its sophomore season on the August 8 & 9 weekend by hosting the Tri County League Championship Tournament at Ag Park. The youngest team in the league by far, the all girls local club once again competed in the predominantly boys Tri County League finishing with a much improved 5 – 7 record. Adding to this statistic was the fact that 3 of their losses were 1 run ball games. The Seahawks carried 16 players this season with only two of those being in their final year of U12 competition. In fact, half of this club were still in the U10 category accomplishing a huge leap battling all season against the older players.
Tri County Tournament
Finishing 5th meant that the L’il Decks had to play 4th seeded Ethel in their first game of the tournament. The usually sure handed Seahawks struggled in this game defensively coughing up a lot of unearned runs in losing 14-5.
The Friday night loss sent the home side to the B Pool on Saturday where they were grouped with Crediton and a 3rd seeded Londesborough team that had been upset the night before.
Goderich came out determined versus Crediton with aggressive base running and lively bats winning handily 13-7.
The B Final saw a back and forth game that was exciting and well played. In the end, the higher seed from Londesborough narrowly defeated the girls 8-6 in a game that could have went either way for both teams.
In the A Final, the undefeated Wolverines from Seaforth ran the table in both league and tournament play which is an incredible feat at any level. However, the Champs had their hands full in the final because of a very determined Cinderella team from Benmiller who had pulled off a couple of stunning upsets during the weekend. In the end, the Seaforth bats came through with a late 5-1 victory.
A busy season ends
This group of hard working ball players began their season in mid March with an 8 week indoor program which essentially carried them right onto the outdoor diamond in early May. With six new players to the team (4 of which had never played ball before), the Team gave a tremendous effort to achieve and surpass the early goals that were set out in early May leaving this group with a lot of optimism for a more battle tested group heading into action in 2015.
